Wearing My Fandom On My Sleeve

Literally. There's still a little work to be done, a little shading on Godzilla and the clouds/smoke.  I gave the artist a picture of the original suit, and the box art for the Godzilla: Monster of Monsters for the NES.  This is what she came up with, and I freaking LOVE it!  Anybody else have any Kaiju tattoos?

$30 Well Spent

I found a couple of issues of The Monster Times from 1974 and 1975.  Obviously I had to buy them, and share them with you all (all 0 of you).

The Monster Times ran for 46 issues and was published between 1972 and 1976.Wikipedia

This one is huge, and awesome... and will be framed on my wall one day

Is it me, or is Rodan a little heavy on the eye-liner?

Notes on My Kaijucast Appearance

I listened to the latest episode of the kaijucast featuring yours truly for the third time today, and had a couple of notes...

I said i was a dinosaur nerd growing up, what I should have said was I was, and still am, a dinosaur nerd

I perhaps gave to much credit to Ishiro Honda, the creation of Godzilla is equal parts Honda, Tanaka, and Tsuburaya.

Not only do I love the design of titanosaurus, but I'm a sucker for the misunderstood monster theme. That's when the monster genre works best in my opinion. Plus poor titanosaurus is also a victim, controlled by Mafune and the aliens, adding a layer of tragedy you don't often see in a kaiju.

My brain totally shut off talking about Big Man Japan. What I was trying to say was that the movie was primarily a satire, and the monster fights were mostly played for laughs so it's not fair to compare them to other monster fights. Also cgi was crap Drink every time i say "Yeah"

My wife is fully supportive of my monster movie enthusiasm, she even bought me a huge stack of dvd's for xmas.

No matter how many times I hear my own voice in a recording, I'll never be able to recognize it. Spending time with people who do so much to promote this tiny corner of geek culture, inspired me to do more. Even if it's just writing here on this blog that's viewed by 1 or 2 people.

Hey Kaijucasters!

If you're coming here from kaijucast.com and you heard my brilliant performance* on the latest episode... Hi! I know things look like a ghost town here at the moment but please come back in a few days. I definitely have stuff in the pipeline, I want to expand on some of what i said the show. Not to correct anything I said, just to use that material as a springboard for stuff here. My love for Titanosaurus can't be summed up in single soundbite. Stay tuned kiddies *sarcasm, obviously. God I was hungover

A Kick in the Butt

I was at Emerald City Comic Con over the weekend and had the pleasure of being a guest on the Kaijucast. As we were wrapping up he asked me if I wanted to plug anything... I made the mistake of plugging this blog. That means I'm actually going to have to start generating content!! In the few weeks before the episode is posted, and the horde of Kaijucast listeners descend upon me, i need to figure out what I want this blog to be. Stay tuned

I think this is what they call 'Development Hell'

The script for Legendary's Godzilla reboot/remake just got its 47th writer (3rd or 4th actually, but who's counting). At this point 2014 seems an unlikely release date.

November 3, 1954

Gojira premiered this day in 1954. Easily my favourite movie of all time. I didn't see the original Gojira for almost a decade after I saw King of the Monster. Both movies are good but I love the dark somber tone of the original, I find that the American re-edit robbed Gojira of that. I recognize it was important to do this in order to bring Godzilla to a broader audience, but it took Gojira from masterpiece of sci-fi, to a good monster movie.

It often gets overlooked by the Godzilla fan community because it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the film canon. When you think 'Godzilla' you tend to think of the monster wrestling flicks of the 60's and 70's, not this depressing though provoking movie. This is my go-to movie when I'm trying to introduce new people to these movies. It's easy to dismiss Godzilla movies as cheese-fests (and some of them are), the original breaks down those walls.

So crack a Sapporo and toast the big guy, and all the people who have brought him to us!
